VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
WITH THE LORD & SCHRYVER CONSERVANCY
As you can see from the list of activities and projects posted below, the L&S Conservancy offers a wide range of opportunities to share your skills and talents. Because the legacy of Lord and Schryver is so encompassing, the Conservancy needs people who appreciate the gift of “the ladies” and are willing to help realize our mission.
You do not need to be an “expert” to get involved. None of us was born knowing about Lord and Schryver – most of us are late bloomers! How do your interest, skills and available time coincide? Some opportunities are short, one time efforts; others can be extended as you wish. If interested in these opportunities or to get more information, please call Bobbie at 503-364-3308.

SPECIFIC OPPORTUNITIES
- L&S Diggers – meets on Thursday mornings to help with
hands-on rehabilitation of the historic gardens at Deepwood
- Historical research – There are many “holes” in our knowledge about the
gardens and other activities of L and S. These projects can be
researched on your own schedule. Training available.
- Garden Tours - As awareness and interest increases about Lord and
Schryver, we are frequently asked to lead garden tours of the historic
gardens at Deepwood. This need is seasonal, especially in the spring.
A great way to learn about the gardens, L and S design principles and
the rehabilitation work of the Conservancy. Training available.
- Speaker’s Bureau - Several times during a year, the Conservancy is contacted
by various groups requesting a presentation on L and S. We already have
programs in place or you can develop your own. The need is periodic. Training
is available.
- Marketing/Publicity - There is a great need to get the word out about what the
Conservancy is doing. A common reaction when folks become aware is
“Wow! I had no idea!” Many people are intrigued with the story of L and S.
There are many paths to pursue in reaching people. This job is wide open –
it’s what you want to make it! We have a booth at the Salem Art Fair
which is a great way to connect with the public.
- Interpretive Center - The L&S Conservancy is collaborating with The Friends of
Deepwood and the City of Salem to develop collaboratively an Interpretive
Center in the Carriage House at Deepwood. The content will include the early
history of Salem, information about the house and its families and of course,
Lord and Schryver. While still at the initial stages, this project will need the help
of many citizens in a wide variety of capacities including fundraising and
staffing the center for visitors. Your commitment could be short or long term!
- Lecture Series - The Conservancy is organizing a series of 3 lectures for future
which will focus upon the evolution of the NW landscape with a special emphasis
on the role of women. The goal is to better understand the context in which Lord
and Schryver practiced. We will need a lot of help including publicity and
hospitality.
Thank you so much for considering these options. The story of L&S is interesting and inspiring and holds much to be treasured and promoted.
